I assume that you're referring to the tube that goes to the automatic choke assembly. The tube may have been removed because the previous owner felt that it was adversely affecting the carb's performance somehow, or your carburetor has been changed from the original Holley 4000 (I believe that's the right one, it is on my 55), and the choke tube wouldn't fit the new carb, which would explain why your air cleaner no longer fits the replaced carburetor as well.
Whichever way it is, you're going to need to see what was originally on your 56 and decide if its worth it to you to return the car to stock. That may be the only way that you'll get the original air cleaner to fit.
A word of advice: There are a lot of so-called experts out there. Ask me how I know. Do your homework before you commit to making any changes and spending a lot of money. You want to get it right the first time, in order to protect your pocket book and your investment in your small bird. Good Luck!
