gas gauge reads backwards

On my '56, when I fill the tank the gauge goes almost to empty. As I drive, the gauge increases toward full. I assume I need to reverse the wires on the gauge. Right? If so, do I need to take the instrument panel out to get at it?
Or, is there an easier fix?

I believe you can get at the gauge to check the wiring and even remove and change it if necessary. A site I was on recently said that it was possible, but that most people would take the seat out of the car first. If you've ever been under the dash on one of these cars on the driver's side you'll quickly agree with the procedure. Good Luck!
