i have a posi in my 55 bird....i went thru all this in 2002..when i also went to 4 wheel disc brakes...55 & 56 rears are the same..it's a weird DANA 44 but with axles and tube ends like a ford...(rest of it is like a mopar)....to put in a posi, many things have to be done...i found out that the place to go to help with this was REIDER RACING in north (or was it south?) CAROLINA...they will sell you a posi, but it's not the eaton or cone type...it's a positrack?...this has 'ramps and springs in it ( don't know how it works, but it does...$500...it is it's own carrier complete and ready to put in your rear housing..one more thing > the side bearings on your housing are unique to this rear end..regular mopar ones will be too big...but REIDER RACING knows all about this and will sell you the special carrier side bearings in the right sizes to make this work.($37.00)...you can shim everything up like any other DANA 44..i took 20+ jpeg. photos of all this when i did it to show to anyone else that wanted to try this...in ten+ years, NO ONE has asked me to send them to them..so they sit on the shelf...i also have e-mailable jpeg. files instead of the ones i have printed out..you would have to print them yourself...let me know what you want to do ( if anything--maybe you want nothing) e-mail me at:
