57 Transmission problem
Looking for help. Alaska is my life ... but major repairs are costly up here. Hoping to find advice.
Transmission on my 57 will not shift into third gear until I let off of the accelerator. It then pops into gear. When I accelerate, it slips back into 2nd gear. Local mechanic (without seeing the car in person) says it's a total transmission rebuild to the tune of about $3,500 - not including shipping of the rebuilt tranny. And this probably includes the cost of shipping the core back in exchange. Suggestions on what I might check before diving into my retirement account and dog's inheritance? Thanks very much. David |

Well, I hope that's not the case. :)
I am looking for a reply from someone who might have already been down this road with a 55-57 bird in the past so I can compare notes. Appreciate any experience out there. David |

Hi David,
A long shot but it may be worth a try. Perhaps the linkage? In particular the kick-down rod could be bent, out of adjustment or broken. Do you have a shop manual for the car and transmission? They are available in pdf also. It may save some time and postage if you download one if you don't have them. They could help in troubleshooting and adjustment. Of course you know there are two types. Air cooled for 55-early 56 and water cooled late 56-57. Here is one source: http://www.mre-books.com/shopmanuals/downloads.html There are also some Alaskan and Canadian Y-Blockers who may have some resources closer than the lower 48. I would also consider posting the question here: Technical since you are so isolated. Jim

Thank you, Jim
I do have the shop manual (generic for Ford 57s). I'll also check the other forum as suggested. If nothing else, hoping to stretch this transmission through until Fall. Our summers are too good to miss without the 'bird. Winters are long - and a much better time to have the work done. Thanks again. David |
