upper ball joints

I am nearly finished rebuilding my steering column on my 64 landau, but the upper ball joint rubber seal on the driver side is torn. I am wondering if anyone has replaced the uppers(ball joints), and if it is as easy as the manual makes it seem or should I take it to a shop ? I replaced one of the lowers, but am wondering about the possibilities of the spring coming out of its seats etc. Any help/hints would be greatly appreciated.

Blacksbird , if you go to T-bird Garage (Jim Wulf ) you will find a section where Jim replaces a torn boot with a new one . If the ball joint is still good you canjust replace the boot and not have to touch the spring .Ian M Greer

To replace the upper ball joint, you need a special tool.. It's pressed out and back into place.
