I'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing but I assume that you are talking about ball joints. They attach into a tapered seat and the nut forces the connection together so that there is no play in the joint.

These type of joints are assembled easily but have to be removed with a ball joint fork. The fork destroys the rubber seal and part so they have to be replaced. Even on a new vehicle a lot of force is required- add in a few decades of rust and wear and the force required is multiplied.

I suggest that you get the correct size fork, a two-pound sledgehammer and go at it. Heating the spindle area where the joint attaches will expand the seat and should make the process easier. Don't let the metal get red and let it cool in air.
