engine knock

I acquired my 62 convertible over the winter, inspected it, had no noises/taps/knocks, that I noticed, at least. I changed the plugs, wires, coil and timing as well as starter. I don't know when the knock started within that series of events, but it's there now. I performed the cylinder test to see if it is coming from a cylinder and if so, which one. Indeed it is, #1 cylinder, when I disconnect that wire the sound changes from a knock to more of a tap. I think this is major. Anyone have any advice other than plan for a rebuild?

The only advice that I have is to put it out of service before it gets worse. A knock as you described is most likely a rod bearing and you don't want to break a rod.

Chances are that the issue was there with the previous owner and he used a heavy weight oil in it to reduce the noise, and sold it during the winter when he knew you wouldn't be driving it.
