Where is the serial number on the frame?

Hi,

I am considering buying a 57 bird. I'd like to know where on the frame (or elsewhere) I should look to check the serial number matches the VIN tag. Also, is the tag under the hood the only one I should look for?

The tag uner the hood is the only place for that information. The serial number is located in three places. Only one you can get to easly. It is in the engine area on the passanger side. Just below the heater fan on the top of the frame. The other two places are more difficult if not possible to get at. The first is on the top of the cross over frame weld plate. Which is only accessable once the body is removed from the frame. The other is in the rear on the top side of the cross frame between the two main rails as they end at the rear ofthe car. This one is seeable with a mirrow only after the frame is cleaned up. After 50+ years this one is also hard to find and read. Sometimes you can get a few of the numbers or letters. I cleaned mine up with a wire brush then looked with a magnified mirrow.
