Balky shifter

I have a '56 with the 3 speed OD transmission. Won't shift from 1st to 2nd until warmed up, and won't downshift from 3rd to 2nd at all (sometimes with double clutching). Linkages are very loose in shift levers underneath. Does this sound like the problem or is it a bad synchro?

Definitely a problem. I would check both ends of the shifter rods for wear. Also the holes that they go into. They may be loose due to wear. Check the nuts holding the arms (levers)that the rods go into (both ends)to see if they are loose.. Many of the parts of the shifter, including the rods and arms, are available from the parts suppliers.

If not any of these, then its something in the trans.
