Rotation of speedometer cable.
1956 Ford Thunderbird, automatic.
I am having problems with the rotation of the cable going to the speedometer. The rotation of the cable is counter clock wise when viewing from the open end of the cable. However the speedometer will not work if it goes in this direction. It should be clockwise. Normal installation of 90 degree adapter. Any thoughts. |

Yes. I have two and rotation is still the same. Transmission has had new seals installed. I questioned the shop about the drive gear ring installation. They indicated that the drive ring only went on one way. Have tried two speedometer heads with a drill motor. Speedometer works when the shaft is turning in a clockwise direction when viewed at the end of the cable.

It will actually register when going in reverse. If you put it in drive it will not function. If you test the speedo head separately it will only register going in a clockwise direction. I have viewed the shaft rotation without the speedometer pod in place. I have another transmission and took off the tail shaft housing. It does not matter which way the drive gear goes on the shaft. I am going to replace the drive gear for the 90 degree drive and see what happens. I am at a loss.

Paul,
Thanks for asking. No progress yet. Called a major parts house that has a technical help line. Their answer was I somehow had a different drive gear on the output shaft. I don't know about that as every indication is that this is a air-cooled thunderbird transmission. I was flirting with using a standard speedo cable from a 55 passenger car, but haven't made that leap. I sure don't want to pull the engine and transmission to check this out. Peace to you. |
