Overdrive

Hello,
I have a 1956 Bird with a three-speed manual transmission and 312 Y block. Everything I read says it should have an overdrive but Ill be darned if I can find out how to turn it on. Some articles say it automatically kicks in and others say there is a switch. It does not kick in automatically and I cannot find any switch. Any thoughts you might have on this topic? It currently hits about 3000RPM at 60 miles an hour, seems like the overdrive should kick in and take it down closer to 2000RPM. Any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

Original O/D's had a pull handle under the dash. Should be marked Overdrive. To engage it has to be pushed in. It is to the right of the steering column. If you don't have this handle, then you do not have overdrive.

Thanks for the info Paul, I see under the dash the hood release to the right of the steering column and then predrilled and threaded place for another bracket but nothing there. That must be where the overdrive switch would be. I thought they all came with overdrive, but perhaps it was an option?

Overdrive was an option

Overdrive is an Option, not a standard feature.

OK, it was an option. That solves the mystery. I ll need to look for the parts and labor to convert it. Definitely needs it for the highway. Thanks again for your info Paul.
