1966 Loose steering column.

Just bought a 1966 Town Landau with swing away steering. The steering wheel is tight on the shaft but I can lift the wheel and shaft about 1/2" inside the tube with the column in the locked position. I am guessing it's a bushing. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
Republic

Have a look at these tips. Also, search for "column" in the search box for this forum and you'll find some good info.

Republic: the problem you describe is usually cured by replacing the sleeve around the upper steering shaft bearing. This involves removing the steering wheel, lifting the turn signal switch to see the bearing and the space where the sleeve goes. Fordman
