Question engine swap

I have been having some oil pressure problems and my uncle believes it is the engine bearings. Have any of you done this or had it done for you. Would it be cheaper/easier to just swap out the engine? Please help!

Which engine do you have, the 3.8 or 4.6

How do you know you have an oil pressure problem?

The stock oil pressure gauge is actually only an "idiot light". The gauge does not display actual oil pressure. It registers a reading anytime the oil pressure is 5 psi or higher. However, the needle moves to an arbitrary position, and is misleading.

For example, when the engine is cold, and you exceed 2000 rpms, the oil pressure is over 90 psi. Have you ever seen the gauge register that ?

This info. is based on the 4.6 engine

My bird is a 3.8. My uncle and I thought that my guage was messed up and had a dead spot on it. About 1500 miles after an oil change the light/gauge drops when it is idleing at a stop light, backing up, etc. and in gear it drops below 6 psi (when my idiot light comes on) when this happens my tach is at about 700 RPM's or so. Is this acceptible? Should I have it checked out? And another thing are the head gaskets on a '96 still a problem I've heard they were supposedly fixed in '96 and '97 thank all of you so much

It is possible that the sending unit is bad. They are fairly easy to change, and don't cost that much. You could try that first. Does the sound of the engine change when the light comes on?

My uncle thought that was the main reason for the light and replaced it and in the processes hooked up a mechanical guage and it read when cold about 6.5 psi and then when it got hot it went down to about 5 something so the light came on when it was at idle but when put in neutral and the RPM's went up it went just over 6 so the light went back off. thank you for your time and thoughts if you have any other ideas send me a reply
